Tanzania: Chinese Investments in Agricultural Sector

August 25, 2009

Agricultural Investments in Tanzania

According to a phone interview with Tanzanian Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives Stephen Masatu Wasira, who in a conversation with Xinhua News Agency praised the good cooperation between Tanzania and China on Monday, the country is much welcoming the increasingly significant Chinese investments in Tanzania’s agricultural sector.

Chinese technology and modern methods for  advanced irrigation based agricultural production is much needed to improve Tanzania’s food production and ensure a stable and safe food supply.

During the visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Tanzania in February this year also several agreements on major cooperations projects within the agricultural sector where signed, including also some major farming project in the Morogoro region of eastern Tanzania.

The country, which is traditionally focused much on the agricultural sector has during the last few years been stressing the importance of guaranteeing a stable food supply for the 44 million inhabitants of Tanzania.

Facing much the same challenges as most countries throughout the Sub-Saharan region, Tanzania’s agricultural sector is not modernized enough to benefit from irrigation based farming.

Tanzania: Agricultural Development & Irrigation Needed

Due to the little and irregular rainwater, much of Tanzania’s grain production is heavily dependent on the weather.

Irrigation technology from China is going to lead to a more productive agricultural sector in Tanzania.

Investments from China, who announced  the set-up of an agricultural technology demonstration center in Tanzania was introduced already 2006 in the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

Minister Wasira quoted the old Chinese saying of “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime” and expressed his wishes for an improved and mutual fruitful cooperation between the two countries and in order to better overcome the demanding challenges of guaranteeing stable food supply for Tanzania’s population.

I Boniface Maziku , lead a local NGO which deals with development groups of farmers. The past five years we have surveyed and found that rain fed agriculture is less profiting to the local poor people, we must get them working in small irrigation gardens and farms so as to be sure of getting quarterly harvests to meet their family needs.
there are some areas where surface water harvest is possible also shallow well and pond construction is possible but people do not have adequate tools of small dam construction.
My interest to work with you as an appropriate technology company who can bring tools and equipment for small irrigation and crop processing tools.
The duty of our organization called TABORA VOLUNTARY DEVELOPMENT SOCIETY will be to mobilize groups of people who need such tools to reinforce their community banks linked to the government run banks so that once they need tools to be bought from you , they can get funds from the banks and pay you to own the tools.
our organization will also prepare demonstrative land to be tilled between us and your organization and the harvest will be divide among us two partners. we are able to acquire any size of land we need provided is legal.
I hope with this introduction you will be in position to see what kind of partnership we can go through with your organization.
